Thread changes are a routine part of operating an embroidery machine.
Did you know there is a knot that is small enough to pass through the needle eye, yet secure enough not to come undone?
That knot is called the Weaver’s Knot.

In this article, we will walk you through how to tie a Weaver’s Knot—together with a demo video—so you can make your thread-changing process smoother and more efficient.

What Is a Weaver’s Knot?

A Weaver’s Knot is one method of joining two threads together. Compared with common knots, it creates a very small, tight knot that is unlikely to slip, making it ideal for embroidery machines.
Other knots like the “overhand knot” or “square knot” create larger knots that cannot pass through the needle eye, making them unsuitable for thread changes on embroidery equipment.

Although the Weaver’s Knot may feel a little tricky at first, once you get used to it, your thread-changing process becomes much smoother.

How to Tie a Weaver’s Knot

Thread A (blue): the new thread you want to switch to
Thread B (white): the thread currently installed on the machine

① Cross the two threads, placing Thread B on top.

② Hold the lower end of Thread A, loop it upward and around, and bring it through the space between A and B.

③ Pass Thread B through the loop you created in Step 2.

④ While keeping Thread A from slipping out, gently pull Thread B.

⑤ Press the center of the knot and pull both ends of Threads A and B evenly.

Maintaining equal tension on both threads is the key to forming a clean, secure knot.

⑥ Once the knot tightens firmly, you’re done!

Press the center of the knot and pull both ends of Threads A and B evenly.

Thread-Change Tip for Embroidery Machines

Using a Weaver’s Knot during thread changes allows the knot to pass smoothly through the needle eye, making the entire process faster and more efficient.
